The Microphone Icon
macOS features a powerful built-in Dictation tool that allows you to speak to your computer instead of typing. To make this feature easily accessible, macOS can display a Dictation menu icon (which looks like a small, classic microphone) in your menu bar. Clicking this icon allows you to quickly toggle Dictation on or off, or access the Dictation settings.
However, if you never use voice dictation and prefer to type everything manually, this icon serves no purpose. It takes up valuable space in your menu bar, contributing to visual clutter. Furthermore, because Dictation can also be toggled using a simple keyboard shortcut (often pressing the microphone key or pressing the Fn key twice), having a permanent, clickable icon taking up screen real estate is entirely redundant for most users. If you want a cleaner desktop environment, you should remove the microphone icon.
How to Hide the Dictation Icon
You can remove this specific status icon via your System Settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your screen and select System Settings… (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- In the left-hand sidebar, scroll down and click on Keyboard.
- In the right-hand pane, scroll down to the Dictation section.
- Look for a toggle switch or checkbox labelled Show Dictation in menu bar (or “Show Dictation menu in menu bar”).
- Click the toggle switch to turn it Off (or uncheck the box).
- (Optional) If you want to disable the feature entirely to save battery and ensure your microphone isn’t listening for the hotkey, toggle the main Dictation switch to Off.
The microphone icon will instantly vanish from your menu bar, giving you back that space for other, more frequently used applications.
