How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Make my keyboard focus easier to see’ Option

In Windows 10, an accessibility feature designed for users with visual impairments significantly alters how keyboard navigation looks. If you use the Tab key to move between buttons, text boxes, and links on a webpage or within a settings menu, Windows normally draws a very thin, faint dotted line around the currently selected item. If you enable the “Make my keyboard focus easier to see” option, Windows replaces this subtle line with a thick, bold, solid black box.

While this high-contrast box is excellent for visibility, many users find it aesthetically displeasing and overly intrusive, especially when navigating through modern, cleanly designed applications where a massive black rectangle clashes with the interface. If you accidentally enabled this feature or inherited a computer with it turned on, you can return to the default, subtle focus indicator.

How to Disable High Contrast Keyboard Focus

You can adjust the focus indicator in the Ease of Access settings.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
2. In the Settings menu, click on Ease of Access (or “Accessibility”).
3. Scroll down the left-hand navigation pane and click on Keyboard under the “Interaction” section.
4. Look for the section labelled “Change how keyboard focus works.”
5. You will see a checkbox labelled Make it easier to see the keyboard focus.
6. Click the checkbox to remove the checkmark.

The thick black box will instantly disappear. The next time you use the Tab key to navigate an interface, you will see the standard, subtle dotted line indicating your current selection.
