How to Disable the macOS ‘Show day of the week in menu bar’ Option

Streamlining the Menu Bar Clock

macOS offers a highly customizable digital clock in the top-right corner of the menu bar. By default on many systems, it displays not just the time, but also the day of the week (e.g., “Mon 10:30”). For users who frequently lose track of what day it is during a busy work week, this constant visual reminder is incredibly helpful.

However, if your schedule is rigidly structured or if you simply prefer a cleaner, more minimalist interface, the three-letter abbreviation for the day is just unnecessary clutter taking up valuable horizontal space. On 13-inch MacBooks, every millimeter of menu bar space counts. If you want to reduce the clock to display only the essential digits, you can easily remove the day of the week.

How to Hide the Day of the Week

You can adjust the clock’s appearance in the Control Center settings.

  1. Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the menu bar and select System Settings… (or System Preferences).
  2. Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Control Center (On older macOS versions, this is found under “Dock & Menu Bar”).
  3. Scroll down the right-hand pane to the “Menu Bar Only” section.
  4. Click on the Clock Options… button next to “Clock”.
  5. In the popup window, look for the toggle switch labelled Show day of the week.
  6. Toggle the switch to the Off position.
  7. Click Done.

The three-letter day abbreviation will instantly disappear from your menu bar, leaving behind a much cleaner, more compact digital time display that leaves more room for your essential application icons.
