The Distracting Notification Counters
Windows 10 taskbar badges are small, circular counters that appear directly on the icons of pinned applications. For example, if you have the Mail app pinned, a small number will appear over its icon indicating how many unread emails you have. Slack or Discord might show a red badge when you have unread messages.
While this feature is designed to keep you informed, it can also be a massive source of anxiety and distraction. Seeing a bright red “14” sitting on your email icon constantly pulls your attention away from your current work. If you prefer to check your messages on your own schedule rather than having your taskbar shout at you about pending tasks, you can completely disable these numerical badges for all applications.
How to Disable Taskbar Badges
You can turn off these notification counters in the Personalization settings.
- Right-click on any empty space on your Windows 10 taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings from the context menu (or open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar).
- Scroll down the right-hand pane until you see the list of toggle switches.
- Look for the option labelled Show badges on taskbar buttons.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
All the small numerical counters and notification dots will instantly vanish from your taskbar icons. Your pinned apps will return to their clean, default appearance, allowing you to focus on your work without feeling pressured by unread message counts.
