How to Disable the Windows 10 ‘Lock Screen’ Completely (Skip to Login)

The Redundant Lock Screen

When you boot up a Windows 10 PC, or wake it from sleep, you are greeted by the “Lock Screen.” This screen displays a pretty background image, the time, and the date. However, it serves no actual security purpose. To actually type your password and access your desktop, you must click the mouse or press a key to slide the Lock Screen out of the way, revealing the actual “Login Screen” hidden beneath it.

For desktop users or anyone who values efficiency, this extra click is completely redundant. It adds an unnecessary step between turning on your computer and actually getting to work. If you want Windows to boot directly to the password prompt, skipping the pretty but useless picture entirely, you can disable the Lock Screen via the Registry.

How to Disable the Lock Screen Completely

You must modify the registry to bypass this screen.

  1. Press the Windows Key + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor. (Click “Yes” if prompted by UAC).
  2. Navigate exactly to the following path:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Policies > Microsoft > Windows
  3. Right-click on the “Windows” folder, select New > Key. Name this new key exactly Personalization.
  4. Click on the new “Personalization” folder so it is highlighted. Now, right-click in the empty space in the right-hand pane.
  5. Select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
  6. Name this new DWORD exactly NoLockScreen.
  7. Double-click “NoLockScreen” and change the “Value data” from 0 to 1.
  8. Click OK and close the Registry Editor.

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you lock your PC (Windows Key + L) or wake it from sleep, you will be taken instantly to the password input box, completely skipping the swipe-to-unlock gesture.
