The Automatic Indentation Problem
When typing a standard document in Google Docs, you might occasionally want to indent the first line of a paragraph. If you press the Tab key at the beginning of a line, Google Docs will push the text to the right. However, Google Docs often tries to be “helpful” by assuming you want this formatting applied permanently. When you hit Enter to start the next paragraph, it automatically indents that new line as well.
If you are writing a script, formatting a poem, or simply prefer to manually control your spacing without the software guessing your intentions, this forced auto-formatting is incredibly frustrating. You find yourself constantly pressing Backspace at the start of every new line just to return to the left margin. You can disable this behavior.
How to Stop Automatic Paragraph Indentation
You can reset the paragraph styling so that it defaults to a zero-indent layout.
- Open your web browser and navigate to any open document in Google Docs.
- Look at the ruler at the absolute top of the document (just beneath the formatting toolbar). You will see a small blue rectangle (First Line Indent) sitting on top of a small blue downward-pointing triangle (Left Indent).
- If the blue rectangle is pushed to the right, click and drag the blue rectangle all the way back to the
0.00mark on the far left side, so it sits perfectly on top of the triangle. - Next, highlight a line of text that is now perfectly aligned to the left margin.
- Click on Format in the top menu bar.
- Hover over Paragraph styles, then hover over Normal text.
- Click on Update ‘Normal text’ to match.
By updating the core “Normal text” style to feature a zero-inch first-line indent, Google Docs will stop trying to automatically push your new paragraphs to the right when you press the Enter key.
