How to Stop Google Chrome from Automatically Suggesting Passwords on Sign-up Forms

Why Does Chrome Suggest Passwords?

When you create a new account on a website, Google Chrome detects the registration form and automatically displays a pop-up suggesting a strong, randomly generated password. If you accept it, Chrome saves this password to your Google Account.

While this is an excellent feature for general security, it is completely redundant if you already use a dedicated third-party password manager like 1Password, Bitwarden, or LastPass. Having two different password managers fighting over a sign-up form creates a confusing, overlapping mess on your screen. To fix this, you should disable Chrome’s built-in generator.

How to Turn Off Chrome’s Automatic Password Suggestions

You can disable the generation feature directly within the Chrome settings menu.

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.
  2. Click the More (three dots) icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords.
  5. Click on Google Password Manager.
  6. In the new Password Manager tab, look at the left sidebar and click on Settings.
  7. Find the toggle switch labelled Offer to save passwords.
  8. Turn this switch Off.

By turning off the offer to save passwords, Chrome also simultaneously disables the automatic strong password generator. From now on, when you click into a “New Password” field on a sign-up form, Chrome will remain silent, allowing your dedicated third-party password manager to handle the generation and saving without any visual interference.
