Why Stop WhatsApp Image Backups?
By default, Google Photos on Android can automatically back up every image you receive through WhatsApp. Because WhatsApp compresses images and often contains memes, forwarded messages, and low-quality screenshots, backing up this folder can quickly consume your limited Google account storage space.
Stopping this specific folder from backing up ensures that your Google Photos library only contains your actual camera roll and high-quality memories.
How to Disable WhatsApp Image Backups in Google Photos
You can easily stop Google Photos from uploading your WhatsApp images by adjusting the device folder settings within the app.
- Open the Google Photos app on your Android smartphone.
- Tap on your Profile picture or initial in the top-right corner of the screen.
- Select Photos settings from the menu that appears.
- Tap on Backup (or “Backup & sync” on older versions).
- Scroll down and tap on Back up device folders.
- You will see a list of all the image folders on your device. Scroll down until you find WhatsApp Images.
- Toggle the switch next to WhatsApp Images to the Off position.
You can also repeat this process for WhatsApp Video or WhatsApp Animated Gifs if you want to save even more space.
Alternative Method: Using the Library Tab
You can also manage folder backups directly from the Library view.
- Open Google Photos and tap the Library tab at the bottom right.
- Look under the Photos on device section and tap View all.
- Find and tap the WhatsApp Images folder.
- At the top of the screen, turn off the Back up & sync toggle switch.
Disabling this backup will not delete any WhatsApp images that have already been uploaded to your Google account. You will need to delete those manually if you want to reclaim the storage space they currently occupy.
