Mozilla Firefox features a modern tab interface that includes “Tab Hover Cards.” When you have multiple tabs open and you rest your mouse cursor over an inactive tab, a small pop-up box appears displaying the full title of the webpage, its URL, and a thumbnail preview image of the site. While this is helpful for identifying tabs when you have dozens open, the pop-up cards can feel distracting and visually cluttered if you prefer a clean, minimalist browsing experience. If you find these tooltips annoying, you can easily disable the hover cards.
How to Disable Tab Hover Cards
You can turn off the visual tab previews directly in the general settings menu.
- Open the Mozilla Firefox browser.
- Click the Application Menu button (the three horizontal lines) in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
- Ensure you are on the General tab in the left-hand menu.
- Scroll down the page until you find the Tabs section.
- Look for the checkbox labelled Show image previews when hovering over a tab (or similar phrasing depending on your exact version of Firefox).
- Click this checkbox to uncheck it.
The change takes effect immediately. Now, when you hover your mouse over an inactive tab, the large thumbnail card will no longer appear. Instead, Firefox will simply show a standard, non-intrusive text tooltip displaying the title of the webpage, returning your browser to a cleaner, classic interface.
