Windows 11 File Explorer features a handy “Preview Pane” that allows you to click on a document, image, or PDF and see a miniature rendering of its contents on the right side of the window without actually opening the file. While incredibly useful for quickly identifying photos, this feature forces Windows to constantly generate previews in the background as you scroll through your files. In folders containing hundreds of massive PDFs or complex CAD files, this constant background rendering can cause the entire File Explorer window to freeze, stutter, or crash. If you prefer raw speed over visual previews, you should disable this feature.
How to Turn Off the Preview Pane
You can toggle this feature off directly from the main File Explorer command bar.
- Click the folder icon on your taskbar (or press the Windows Key + E) to open File Explorer.
- Look at the main command bar at the very top of the window.
- Click on the View button (it usually has an icon with small squares or a checklist next to it).
- A drop-down menu will appear. Move your mouse down to Show.
- A secondary menu will fly out to the side. Look for Preview pane.
- If the Preview pane has a small checkmark next to it, it is currently active. Click it once to uncheck it and turn it off.
The right-hand preview section will instantly vanish from your File Explorer. As you click on files moving forward, Windows will no longer attempt to render them, resulting in significantly faster navigation through densely packed directories.
