When the battery on a Windows 11 laptop reaches a critically low level (usually around 10% or 5%), the operating system triggers a loud, urgent auditory alarm. This sound is designed to grab your attention immediately so you can plug in the charger before your computer abruptly shuts down, potentially losing unsaved work. However, if you are frequently working in a quiet library, a classroom, or during a silent presentation, this sudden, piercing alarm can be highly embarrassing and disruptive. If you prefer to rely solely on visual battery notifications, you can completely silence this alarm.
How to Disable the Low Battery Alarm Sound
Because this sound is a core system alert, it cannot be muted by simply turning down your media volume. You must disable the specific audio file associated with the “Low Battery Alarm” system event.
- Click the Start button (the Windows logo on your taskbar) and type Control Panel. Press Enter to open it.
- In the top right corner of the Control Panel, ensure the “View by” option is set to either Large icons or Small icons (not Category).
- Click on Sound.
- A new Sound properties window will appear. Click on the Sounds tab at the top.
- Look in the “Program Events” scroll box. This is a list of every sound your PC makes.
- Scroll down the list until you find the Windows section, and look specifically for Critical Battery Alarm. Click on it once to highlight it.
- Look near the bottom of the window for a drop-down menu labelled Sounds: (It will likely say “Windows Foreground.wav”).
- Click that drop-down menu, scroll to the very top of the list, and select (None).
- Next, find Low Battery Alarm in that same Program Events list, click it, and change its drop-down menu to (None) as well.
- Click Apply, then click OK.
Will I Still Get a Warning?
Yes. Disabling the audio file only stops the audible chime.
Windows 11 will still display the visual pop-up notification box in the bottom right corner of your screen when your battery hits 10%, giving you plenty of silent warning to save your work and find a power outlet.
