How to Set a Spotify Song as Your Morning Alarm on iPhone

Waking up to the default iOS alarm sounds can often be jarring. Many users prefer a gentler or more motivating start to their day by waking up to their favourite music. While Apple Music integrates seamlessly with the iOS Clock app, setting a song from Spotify as your morning alarm requires a different approach, as Apple does not natively support third-party music services within the default alarm settings.

Why You Cannot Use Spotify in the Default Clock App

The native iOS Clock app only allows you to select alarm tones from the default system sounds, tones purchased from the iTunes Store, or songs downloaded to your device via Apple Music. Because Spotify operates within its own ecosystem and DRM (Digital Rights Management) framework, the iOS Clock app cannot access your Spotify library directly.

Using Third-Party Alarm Apps

To use a Spotify song as your alarm, you must use a third-party alarm clock application from the App Store that specifically supports Spotify integration. Several reputable apps offer this functionality.

Option 1: Using the ‘Morning’ Alarm App

Applications like ‘Morning Alarm for Spotify’ or similar highly-rated alternatives are designed specifically for this purpose.

  1. Open the App Store on your iPhone and search for a Spotify-compatible alarm app (ensure you check reviews and privacy policies before downloading).
  2. Install and open the application.
  3. You will be prompted to connect the app to your Spotify account. Tap Connect to Spotify and log in using your Spotify credentials.
  4. Grant the application the necessary permissions to access your Spotify data and control audio playback.
  5. Create a new alarm within the third-party app.
  6. In the alarm settings, select Music or Spotify as the sound source.
  7. Search for the specific track, playlist, or podcast you wish to wake up to and select it.
  8. Save the alarm.

Crucial Requirements for Third-Party Alarms

Unlike the native iOS Clock app, third-party alarm apps have technical limitations imposed by iOS background app management:

  • Background Refresh: The app must have Background App Refresh enabled in your iPhone settings.
  • Do Not Disturb: Third-party alarms often cannot override iOS ‘Do Not Disturb’ or ‘Sleep Focus’ modes. You must ensure the app is added to the allowed list if you use these focus modes overnight.
  • Volume Levels: The alarm will play at your current media volume level, not the dedicated ringer/alerts volume. Ensure your media volume is turned up before going to sleep.
  • App State: In many cases, the app needs to be left open in the background (not force-quit) for the alarm to trigger reliably.

The Automation Workaround (Shortcuts)

If you prefer not to use third-party apps, you can use the iOS Shortcuts app to create a personal automation, though it is slightly more complex.

  1. Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Automation tab at the bottom.
  3. Tap Create Personal Automation (or the + icon).
  4. Select Time of Day and set your desired wake-up time. Choose whether it should repeat daily.
  5. Tap Next, then tap Add Action.
  6. Search for Play Music or Open App (selecting Spotify). Unfortunately, Siri Shortcuts cannot directly command Spotify to play a specific song without prompting, but it can open the app and trigger playback if you have a Spotify widget or specific shortcut set up.

Due to Apple’s restrictions on third-party music integration, using a dedicated third-party alarm app remains the most reliable method for waking up to your Spotify playlists.
