How to Safely Disable Windows 11 ‘Activity History’ (Stop Sending App Usage to Microsoft)

Windows 11 constantly monitors everything you do. Every time you open a Word document, visit a website in Edge, or play a video game, Windows logs the exact time and duration of that activity. This data is collected under a feature called “Activity History.”

Microsoft claims this is designed to help you “jump back into what you were doing,” but if you use a Microsoft Account, this highly sensitive timeline of your daily life is quietly synchronized to Microsoft’s cloud servers. If you value your privacy, you must manually disable this invisible tracking system.

How to Safely Disable Windows 11 Activity History

You must turn off the feature and manually wipe the data already stored on Microsoft’s servers.

  1. Click the Start button and select the gear icon to open Settings (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
  3. Under the “Windows permissions” section, click on Activity history.
  4. You will see a toggle switch labeled Store my activity history on this device. Toggle it to the Off position.
  5. To destroy the data that has already been collected, click the Clear history button directly below that toggle.
  6. Crucial Step: If you are signed in with a Microsoft Account, click the link on that same page that says Manage my Microsoft account activity data.
  7. This will open a web browser. Log into your Microsoft Privacy Dashboard, find the “Activity History” tab, and click Clear to wipe the data permanently from the cloud.

Your computer will no longer act as a surveillance device monitoring your software usage. Windows will still function perfectly, but your daily habits will remain entirely private and local to your machine.
