Chromebooks are famous for their simplicity and stability. However, they are still physical computers. Occasionally, the Embedded Controller (EC)—the low-level hardware chip that manages power, the keyboard, and the trackpad—can lock up. When this happens, your keyboard might stop typing completely, the trackpad might refuse to click, or the Chromebook might refuse to turn on even when the battery is fully charged.
Performing a standard “Powerwash” (factory reset) from the software settings menu will not fix this, because a Powerwash only resets the ChromeOS software. It does not touch the hardware controller. To fix physical hardware freezes, you must perform a manual “Hardware Reset” (also known as an EC Reset).
How to Manually Force a Chromebook Hardware Reset
You must use a specific combination of physical hardware keys to cut power to the Embedded Controller.
- First, turn off your Chromebook completely. (Do not just close the lid; hold the power button until the screen goes completely black).
- Unplug the charger and remove any USB drives or external mice.
- Look at the top row of your Chromebook keyboard. Find the Refresh key (it looks like a circular arrow, usually located in the F3 position, directly above the number 3 or 4).
- Find the Power button.
- Press and hold down the Refresh key.
- While continuing to hold the Refresh key, tap the Power button once.
- When the Chromebook screen lights up and the Chrome logo appears, release the Refresh key.
This specific physical key combination physically interrupts the power supply to the Embedded Controller on the motherboard for a split second. The chip is forced to restart, clearing any frozen electrical states. Your keyboard, trackpad, and charging ports will instantly resume normal functionality. (Note: This process does not delete any of your files or passwords; it only resets the hardware chip).
