MacBooks are famous for their massive, glass trackpads and intuitive multi-touch gestures. One of the most common gestures borrowed from the iPhone is “Pinch to Zoom.” By placing two fingers on the trackpad and spreading them apart, you can instantly magnify a webpage in Safari or a high-resolution photo in Preview.
However, because the trackpad is so large, it is remarkably easy to accidentally brush it with your palm and a finger simultaneously while typing. This often triggers an unintended zoom, instantly inflating the text on your screen to a massive size and forcing you to manually pinch back out to reset it. If you prefer to zoom using keyboard shortcuts (Command + Plus/Minus) for better precision, you can completely disable the trackpad gesture.
How to Disable the Pinch to Zoom Gesture on a Mac
You can turn off the magnification gesture directly from the macOS Trackpad settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of your Mac’s screen.
- Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS versions).
- Scroll down the left-hand navigation sidebar and click on Trackpad.
- In the main window on the right, click the Scroll & Zoom tab at the top.
- Look for the item labelled Zoom in or out.
- By default, this is set to “Pinch with two fingers.” Click the toggle switch next to it to turn it completely Off. (On older macOS versions, simply uncheck the corresponding box).
The trackpad will immediately stop recognizing the pinch gesture. You can now rest your hands freely on the keyboard without fear of accidentally magnifying your workspace. To zoom in on content, simply press Command and the Plus (+) key on your keyboard.
