In Windows 11, the standard white mouse pointer features a subtle, grey drop shadow underneath it. This shadow was originally introduced in the early days of Windows to help the cursor stand out against complex, multi-coloured desktop wallpapers. However, on modern high-resolution displays, this shadow is largely unnecessary.
If you are a competitive gamer who demands a perfectly crisp, distraction-free crosshair, or if you simply prefer a flat, modern, minimalist aesthetic for your desktop environment, you might find the artificial shadow annoying. You can easily strip the shadow away from your cursor using the classic Mouse Properties panel.
How to Remove the Mouse Pointer Shadow in Windows 11
Because this is a legacy setting, you must navigate through a few layers of the Settings app to find the classic dialogue box.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Bluetooth & devices.
- In the main window on the right, click on Mouse.
- Scroll down to the “Related settings” section at the bottom of the page and click on Additional mouse settings.
- A classic Windows dialogue box titled “Mouse Properties” will appear.
- Click on the Pointers tab at the very top of this window.
- Look near the bottom of the tab for a checkbox labelled Enable pointer shadow.
- Click the checkbox to deselect it.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
The change is immediate. Your mouse cursor will instantly lose its 3D depth effect, becoming a perfectly flat 2D graphic. If you ever change your mouse scheme or apply a custom cursor pack in the future, you may need to repeat these steps to ensure the shadow remains disabled.
