If you have been using your Windows 11 computer for months without issue, you might occasionally boot up your PC only to be greeted by a massive, unavoidable full-screen prompt that says, “Let’s finish setting up your PC.” This screen interrupts your workflow before you can even reach the desktop, urging you to set up OneDrive, link your Android phone, or purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Microsoft pushes this “Welcome Experience” after major feature updates to remind you of services you have explicitly chosen not to use. If you want your computer to simply boot directly to your desktop without holding your screen hostage for advertising, you can permanently disable this prompt.
How to Stop the “Finish Setting Up” Prompts
You can turn off this full-screen nag screen directly from the Windows 11 Notification settings.
- Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press Windows Key + I on your keyboard).
- In the left-hand navigation pane, click on System.
- In the main window on the right, click on Notifications.
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the Notifications page.
- Click on Additional settings to expand a hidden menu of checkboxes.
- You will see three checkboxes. Find the one labelled: Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows and finish setting up this device.
- Uncheck the box next to it.
- (Optional but recommended): Uncheck the box directly below it that says “Get tips and suggestions when I use Windows” to stop pop-up ads from appearing in your taskbar.
By unchecking these boxes, Windows will remember that you have already configured your PC exactly how you want it. The next time Microsoft releases a major system update, your computer will boot silently to your desktop without interrupting you to sell a subscription.
