How to Disable the Ubuntu ‘Dash to Dock’ (Remove the Left Sidebar Entirely)

By default, Ubuntu Desktop features a persistent launcher bar on the left side of the screen known as the “Ubuntu Dock.” While many users like having quick access to their favourite applications, others prefer a much cleaner, minimalist desktop—especially if they rely entirely on keyboard shortcuts (like pressing the Super/Windows key to search) to launch programs.

While Ubuntu allows you to enable “Auto-hide” so the dock disappears when windows overlap it, it will still slide back onto the screen whenever your mouse touches the left edge. If you want to permanently disable and remove the dock entirely, you must use a specific GNOME extension manager to uninstall the Ubuntu modification.

How to Completely Disable the Ubuntu Dock

You cannot remove the dock from the standard Settings menu. You must disable the background extension that draws the dock on the screen.

  1. Open your Terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T).
  2. First, install the official GNOME Extensions manager app by typing: sudo apt install gnome-shell-extension-prefs
  3. Provide your password and press Enter to install the package.
  4. Once installed, press the Super (Windows) key, search for Extensions, and open the app with the green puzzle piece icon.
  5. Scroll down the list of “Built-in” extensions until you find the one named Ubuntu Dock.
  6. Click the toggle switch next to “Ubuntu Dock” to turn it Off.

The change is instantaneous. The left-hand sidebar will vanish completely, giving you a completely clean desktop environment. When you want to launch an application, you can simply press the Super key to view your Activities overview or type the app’s name. If you ever want the dock back, simply reopen the Extensions app and toggle it back on.
