How to Stop Google Docs from Automatically Creating Numbered Lists

Google Docs is designed to anticipate your formatting needs. By default, if you type the number “1”, followed by a full stop (.), and then press the spacebar, Google Docs assumes you are trying to start a list. It will instantly indent your text and automatically format the line as the beginning of a numbered list.

While this auto-formatting is often helpful, it can be extremely irritating if you are writing a script, formatting legal documents, or simply typing a paragraph that happens to begin with a number. If you find yourself constantly pressing “Undo” (Ctrl + Z) to reverse this automatic formatting, you can turn the feature off completely.

How to Disable Automatic Lists in Google Docs

You can disable this specific auto-formatting feature from the Preferences menu without affecting other spelling or grammar tools.

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Look at the top menu bar and click on Tools.
  3. Select Preferences from the drop-down menu.
  4. A small dialogue box will appear. Ensure you are on the General tab.
  5. Look through the list of checkboxes and find the one labelled Automatically detect lists.
  6. Uncheck this box.
  7. Click the blue OK button at the bottom of the window.

The change takes effect instantly. You can now type “1. ” or “- ” at the beginning of any sentence, and Google Docs will leave your text exactly as you typed it, without automatically converting it into an indented, formatted list.
