By default, every time you tap a letter on your iPhone keyboard, the device plays a small, artificial “click” sound. While some users find this audible feedback helpful for typing accuracy, it can quickly become an annoyance in quiet environments like libraries, offices, or public transport.
If you want to type discreetly without disturbing those around you, you can permanently disable these keyboard sounds through the system settings.
How to Disable Keyboard Clicks
Turning off the keyboard sounds takes only a few seconds and applies to every application on your phone, from Messages to Safari.
- Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
- Scroll down slightly and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
- Scroll down to the “System Sounds & Haptics” section.
- Look for the setting labelled Keyboard Feedback and tap it.
- Toggle the switch next to Sound to the OFF position (the switch will turn grey).
The artificial clicking noise is now permanently disabled. You can open your Messages app immediately to test the keyboard and confirm the silence.
Alternative: Using the Physical Silent Switch
If you actually enjoy the keyboard clicks most of the time but need to quickly silence them for a 30-minute meeting, diving into the Settings menu is unnecessary.
You can use the physical Ring/Silent switch located on the top left side of your iPhone (or the Action Button on newer Pro models). Pushing the switch so that the orange indicator line is visible puts your entire phone into Silent Mode. This will instantly mute all keyboard clicks, along with incoming calls, text message alerts, and notification pings.
When you leave the quiet environment, simply flick the switch back to Ring mode, and your keyboard clicks will return.
Consider Enabling Haptic Feedback Instead
When you disable the clicking sound, typing on a flat glass screen can feel disorienting because you receive no physical confirmation that a key was pressed. Apple provides an excellent compromise: Haptic Feedback.
Instead of a sound, haptic feedback sends a tiny, microscopic vibration through the phone chassis every time you strike a key. It is completely silent to the people around you but provides a satisfying tactile sensation for your thumbs.
To enable this, go back to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback. Leave the “Sound” toggle off, but turn the Haptic toggle ON. Your keyboard will remain silent, but it will now feel much more responsive.
