How to Completely Disable ‘Screen Attention’ (Keep Screen On) System-Wide on Android

Modern Android smartphones, especially the Google Pixel series, feature an accessibility and convenience setting known as “Screen Attention.” When enabled, the operating system periodically utilizes the front-facing camera to scan for a user’s face. If the device detects that you are actively looking at the screen, it overrides the system timeout settings and keeps the display on, regardless of how long you go without touching it. While helpful for reading long articles, this feature continuously polls the camera hardware in the background, consuming battery life and presenting a subtle privacy concern for those who prefer strict control over active camera sensors.

Disable Screen Attention System-Wide

To prevent the Android OS from using the front-facing camera to actively monitor your gaze, we must toggle the feature off within the display settings.

  1. Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Display.
  3. Tap on Screen timeout. (Depending on your device manufacturer, this setting might be located directly on the main Display menu under a slightly different name, such as “Keep screen on while viewing”).
