Introduced in recent versions of Android, Notification History is a system-level feature that retains a log of all recently dismissed notifications (including snoozed alerts). While this is incredibly useful for users who accidentally swipe away an important message before reading it, it acts as a secondary, persistent storage mechanism for sensitive data. If an unauthorized person gains physical access to an unlocked device, they can navigate to the Notification History and read the contents of SMS messages, bank alerts, or multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes that were delivered and dismissed hours ago, bypassing the security of the apps themselves.
This guide explains how to completely disable the Notification History feature system-wide on an Android device, ensuring that once a notification is dismissed, it is permanently erased from the OS memory.
Disable Notification History System-Wide
To prevent the Android System UI from logging and retaining dismissed notifications, we must toggle the feature off within the core notification settings.
- Open the main Settings app on your Android smartphone.
- Scroll down and tap on Notifications.
- Look for a menu option labeled Notification history. (Depending on your device manufacturer, you might need to tap Advanced settings first to find it).
- Tap on Notification history to open its dedicated menu.
- At the top of the screen, locate the master toggle switch labeled Use notification history.
- Toggle this switch to the Off (grey) position.
Verify the System State
When you toggle this switch off, Android immediately purges any existing notification logs currently held in the system memory. It will no longer intercept and store dismissed alerts.
To verify the change is successful, remain on the “Notification history” screen. The list of recently dismissed apps and alerts will be entirely blank, displaying only the toggled-off switch. Furthermore, if you receive a new text message, deliberately swipe it away from your notification shade, and return to this settings menu (if you attempt to turn it back on), that recently dismissed message will not be recoverable.
