How to Completely Disable ‘Preload Pages’ (Prefetch) in Google Chrome

Google Chrome employs a feature called “Preload Pages” (historically known as DNS Prefetching and Prerendering) to drastically accelerate web browsing. When you hover your mouse over a link, or when Chrome predicts which page you are likely to click next based on your browsing habits, it secretly loads that page in the background. When you finally click the link, the site appears to load instantly. While highly impressive, this feature consumes massive amounts of background bandwidth, CPU cycles, and RAM. Furthermore, on a metered internet connection or mobile hotspot, preloading pages you never actually visit wastes expensive data.

Disable Preload Pages via Chrome Settings

Google has moved the preloading controls into the performance and privacy sections of the settings menu.

  1. Launch Google Chrome.
  2. Click the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner of the browser window.
  3. Select Settings from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Performance.
  5. Look for the section labelled Speed.
  6. Locate the toggle switch for Preload pages (which is often described as “Preload pages for faster browsing and searching”).
  7. Toggle the switch to the Off position (the switch will turn grey).

Alternatively, in some newer Chrome builds, this setting is located under the Privacy and security tab, within the Cookies and other site data sub-menu. If you cannot find it under Performance, check the Privacy section.

The Impact on Browsing Speed

Once disabled, you may notice a slight delay when navigating between pages on a website or when clicking search results from Google. This is because Chrome is no longer performing DNS lookups or downloading HTML assets preemptively.

However, the trade-off is a significantly leaner browser footprint. Your computer’s CPU will not spike randomly while reading an article, your RAM usage will stabilize, and your background network traffic will drop to near zero, making this an essential tweak for users on legacy hardware or capped data plans.
