How to Completely Disable ‘Read Aloud’ (Narrator) in Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word includes a built-in accessibility feature known as “Read Aloud,” which utilizes a text-to-speech engine to narrate your document back to you. While this tool is incredibly beneficial for proofreading, catching grammatical errors, or assisting users with visual impairments, it can also be a source of frustration. Remove the Read Aloud Button from the Ribbon

The first step to disabling the feature is to remove the Read Aloud button from the Review tab on the main Microsoft Word Ribbon.

1. Open Microsoft Word and navigate to a blank or existing document.
2. Right-click anywhere on the empty space within the Ribbon at the top of the screen.
3. Select Customize the Ribbon from the context menu.
