If you work extensively with data imported from older systems or external databases, you have undoubtedly seen the tiny, annoying green triangles that Microsoft Excel places in the top-left corner of certain cells. These triangles represent Excel’s “Error Checking” system. The most common trigger for this alert is a cell containing a number that has been formatted as text (which Excel considers a potential error because it cannot perform mathematical calculations on text).
While this feature is designed to prevent accounting mistakes, it is incredibly frustrating when you are deliberately storing numbers as text, such as employee ID badges, ZIP codes, or phone numbers. If you have a spreadsheet with five thousand employee ID numbers, seeing five thousand tiny green triangles cluttering your screen makes the document look messy and difficult to read. You can completely disable this background error checking feature.
Disabling Background Error Checking
You can turn off these visual warnings globally through the core Excel options menu.
- Open the Microsoft Excel desktop application.
- Look at the main menu ribbon at the top of the screen and click on File (in the top-left corner).
- Scroll all the way down the blue sidebar on the left and click on Options (usually the very last item).
- A new “Excel Options” window will appear. In the left-hand menu of this window, click on Formulas.
- Scroll down the main panel until you see a large section labelled Error Checking.
- Locate the checkbox labelled Enable background error checking.
- Click the checkbox to uncheck it.
- Click the OK button at the bottom of the window to save your changes.
The change is instantaneous. The moment you close the options menu, every single green triangle across your entire workbook will vanish immediately, leaving your data clean and uncluttered. Excel will no longer second-guess how you choose to format your information.
