Whenever you take a photo on an Android smartphone, the device usually plays a loud, artificial click designed to mimic the shutter of a traditional mechanical camera. While this provides helpful audio feedback to let you know the picture was successfully captured, it can be highly disruptive if you are trying to take a quiet photo in a museum, a library, or while a child is sleeping.
Fortunately, you do not have to rely on third-party camera apps to take photos silently. Most modern Android phones allow you to completely disable this shutter sound directly within the default camera application’s settings menu.
Disabling the Sound in the Camera Settings
Because Android is highly customisable, the exact layout of the camera app varies slightly between manufacturers (like Samsung, Google Pixel, and OnePlus), but the setting is almost always located in the same general area.
- Unlock your phone and open the default Camera app.
- Look for the Settings icon. On most phones (including Samsung Galaxy devices), this is a small gear icon located in the top-left or top-right corner of the screen. On Google Pixel phones, you may need to swipe down from the top of the screen or tap a small arrow to reveal the settings gear.
- Once the Camera Settings menu opens, scroll down the list of options.
- Look for a setting labelled Shutter sound or Camera sound.
- Tap the toggle switch next to it to turn it Off.
The next time you press the shutter button, the camera will take the photo in complete silence.
The System Volume Workaround
If you cannot find a dedicated “Shutter sound” toggle in your camera’s settings menu, your phone might tie the camera sound directly to your system’s master volume.
- Before you open the camera app, press the physical Volume Down button on the side of your phone repeatedly.
- Keep pressing it until your phone enters Vibrate or Silent/Mute mode.
- Open the Camera app and take a photo. On most phones that lack a dedicated shutter toggle, muting the entire phone will also mute the camera click.
Important Regional Legal Restrictions
If you have tried both methods above and the camera still makes a loud clicking noise, it is highly likely that your phone was manufactured for a specific region where disabling the shutter sound is illegal. In countries like Japan and South Korea, privacy laws mandate that all smartphones must emit a loud sound when taking a photo to prevent surreptitious photography. If your phone is hardcoded to comply with these regional laws, there is no official way to turn the sound off, regardless of your volume settings.
