How to Turn Off Read Receipts on an iPhone

When you send an iMessage from your iPhone to another Apple device, a tiny status indicator appears below the blue text bubble. It initially says “Delivered,” but the exact second the recipient opens the conversation, it changes to “Read” alongside a precise timestamp. While some users love this feature, many find it incredibly stressful, as it creates an unspoken social obligation to reply immediately.

If you want to read a text message without the sender knowing you saw it, you must disable Read Receipts. Apple allows you to turn this feature off globally for everyone, or strategically leave it on for specific contacts (like your spouse or boss).

Method 1: Turn Off Read Receipts Globally (For Everyone)

This is the nuclear option. If you flip this master switch, no one on Earth will ever know if you have read their iMessage. Your text bubbles will simply say “Delivered” forever, giving you the plausible deniability to reply whenever you want.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down the main menu and tap on Messages (the green icon with a white speech bubble).
  3. Scroll down to the third block of settings.
  4. Look for a toggle switch labeled Send Read Receipts.
  5. Tap the green switch to turn it Grey (Off).

The change is instantaneous. You do not need to restart your phone.

Method 2: Turn Off Read Receipts for a Specific Person

Perhaps you generally like having Read Receipts turned on for your family members, but you have one specific coworker who constantly texts you after hours and gets angry if you read their message but don’t reply. You can surgically disable Read Receipts for that one specific conversation.

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Tap on the specific text message conversation with the person you want to restrict.
  3. Look at the very top of the screen. Tap on their Name or Profile Picture.
  4. A new contact settings menu will slide down from the top.
  5. Scroll down slightly until you see the toggle switch labeled Send Read Receipts.
  6. Turn this specific switch Off.
  7. Tap Done in the top right corner.

Now, your spouse will still see the “Read” indicator when you open their messages, but this specific coworker will only ever see “Delivered.”

The Green Bubble Exception (SMS Texting)

It is critical to understand that Read Receipts only exist within Apple’s proprietary iMessage ecosystem (the blue bubbles). If you are texting someone who owns an Android phone, or if your iPhone loses internet connection and falls back to sending an SMS text message (the green bubbles), the Read Receipt system simply does not exist.

Even if you have the master switch turned “On,” an Android user will never receive a notification that you read their text message. The cellular SMS architecture physically cannot transmit that data.

Can People See When I am Typing?

Many users confuse Read Receipts with the “Typing Indicator” (the three small, animated grey dots that appear when someone is writing a reply). You cannot turn off the typing indicator. Apple does not provide a toggle switch for it.

If you have Read Receipts turned off, but you start typing a reply, the other person will still see the three animated dots. This immediately betrays the fact that you have seen their message, completely defeating the purpose of turning off the Read Receipt. If you want to remain invisible, do not type anything into the text box until you are absolutely ready to press Send.
