How to Stop Microsoft Word from Automatically Wrapping Text Around Images

When you paste an image, a chart, or a diagram into a Microsoft Word document, the software must decide how that image interacts with the text around it. By default, Word often inserts the image “In Line with Text,” treating the massive photograph as if it were a single, gigantic letter of the alphabet. However, if you accidentally drag the image, Word might automatically switch the layout to “Square” or “Tight,” aggressively wrapping your paragraphs around the borders of the image.

While text wrapping looks great in magazine layouts and newsletters, it is an absolute nightmare for technical documentation, academic papers, and legal contracts. If you simply want a clean, isolated diagram sitting alone between two distinct paragraphs, having the text violently wrap around the sides of the image makes the document incredibly difficult to read and impossible to format consistently.

You can configure Microsoft Word’s default image insertion behavior, forcing it to permanently respect the rigid structure of your document by locking images “In Line with Text” and completely disabling automatic wrapping.

How to Stop Automatic Text Wrapping in Word

You must change the default paste behavior within the Advanced Options menu.

1. Open your document in Microsoft Word.
2. Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
3. Click on Options at the bottom of the left sidebar.
4. In the Word Options window, select Advanced from the left-hand navigation pane.
5. Scroll down the right pane until you find the section labeled Cut, copy, and paste.
6. Look for the specific dropdown menu labeled Insert/paste pictures as:.
7. Click the dropdown menu and change the selection to In line with text (it may have been accidentally changed to Square or Top and Bottom).
8. Click OK at the bottom of the window to save your changes.

Microsoft Word will now enforce a strict, linear flow. Every time you paste a new image into your document, it will sit perfectly on its own line, behaving exactly like a massive text character. The surrounding paragraphs will remain safely above and below the image, ensuring a clean, highly professional layout.
