Microsoft Word’s AutoCorrect engine is notoriously aggressive when it comes to capitalization. If you type the word “monday” in all lowercase letters and press the spacebar, Word will instantly intercept your keystroke, delete the lowercase “m”, and automatically replace it with a capital “M” (Monday). It applies this exact same rule to all seven days of the week.
While this is grammatically correct in standard English prose, it can be highly frustrating if you are working in specialized fields. If you are writing a complex bash script, formatting a specific database query, or drafting a stylized poem that strictly requires all-lowercase text, having Microsoft Word violently overrule your formatting decisions every time you type a day of the week is incredibly disruptive.

How to Stop Word from Capitalizing Days of the Week
You must turn off the dedicated rule within the Proofing settings.
- Open your document in Microsoft Word.
- Click on File in the top-left corner of the ribbon.
- Click on Options at the bottom of the left sidebar.
- In the Word Options window, select Proofing from the left-hand navigation pane.
- Click the AutoCorrect Options… button in the main pane.
- A new dialog box will open. Ensure you are on the very first tab labeled AutoCorrect.
- Look at the list of checkboxes at the top of the window. Locate the specific checkbox labeled Capitalize names of days.
- Uncheck this box.
- Click OK twice to close both windows and save your changes.
Microsoft Word will instantly stop monitoring your text for calendar days. If you type “tuesday”, “friday”, or “sunday” in all lowercase letters, the text will remain exactly as you intended, allowing you to maintain strict control over your document’s capitalization.
