Many Android smartphones (particularly those from OnePlus, Xiaomi, and older Samsungs) feature a setting called “Pocket Mode.” This feature uses the proximity sensor located near the earpiece of your phone to detect when the device is enclosed in a dark space, like a pants pocket or a purse. When triggered, the phone automatically disables the touch screen and locks the device to prevent accidental butt-dials or pocket-texting.
However, the proximity sensor can easily become confused. If you have a thick, poorly-designed screen protector, or if you simply get some dirt or sweat smudged across the top of the glass, the sensor might falsely believe the phone is in your pocket. The result? You pull your phone out to answer an important call, but the screen is completely locked out with a warning that says “Do not cover the top of the screen.”
If you are frustrated by these constant false positives locking you out of your own device, you can completely disable Pocket Mode.
How to Disable Pocket Mode on Android
You must turn off the proximity sensor trigger in your display or lock screen settings.
On OnePlus / OxygenOS
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Utilities (or Smart & Convenient on older versions).
- Look for the toggle switch labeled Pocket Mode.
- Turn the toggle to the Off position.
On Samsung Galaxy Devices
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Display.
- Scroll down to find the toggle labeled Accidental touch protection.
- Turn the toggle to the Off position.
On Xiaomi / MIUI
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Lock screen.
- Scroll down and find the toggle labeled Pocket mode.
- Turn the toggle to the Off position.
Your phone will no longer monitor the proximity sensor while the screen is off. The display will immediately respond to your touch the moment you press the power button, regardless of what is hovering over the glass.
