Using your Android smartphone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot is incredibly convenient when you need to connect your laptop to the internet at a coffee shop or airport. However, many users experience a frustrating issue where the phone seemingly turns the hotspot off completely randomly, abruptly disconnecting their laptop right in the middle of a download or a Zoom call.
This is not a bug; it is an aggressive battery-saving feature. Because broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal consumes a massive amount of power, Android is programmed to monitor the hotspot. If it detects that no devices have transferred data for a specific period of time (usually 10 or 20 minutes), the operating system automatically shuts the hotspot down to prevent your battery from draining.
If you need your hotspot to remain permanently active—even if your laptop temporarily goes to sleep or drops the connection—you must disable this automatic timeout feature.
How to Stop the Mobile Hotspot from Timing Out
You must dive into the advanced Hotspot settings to disable the timeout timer.
On Samsung Galaxy Devices
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Connections, then tap on Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
- Tap on the words Mobile Hotspot (not the toggle switch, but the text itself).
- Tap on Configure.
- Scroll down and tap Advanced to reveal more options.
- Look for a setting labeled Turn off when no device is connected for or Timeout settings.
- Change the setting to Never timeout.
On Google Pixel / Standard Android
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Network & internet, then tap on Hotspot & tethering.
- Tap on Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Turn off hotspot automatically.
- Turn this toggle to the Off position.
Your Android phone will now broadcast its Wi-Fi signal continuously until the battery dies or you manually turn it off, ensuring your laptop can always reconnect instantly.
