Modern Android smartphones (especially Samsung Galaxy devices) employ aggressive computational photography algorithms. When you point your camera at a subject, a feature often called “Scene Optimizer” uses AI to instantly identify what you are photographing (e.g., a sunset, a plate of food, a dog). The moment you press the shutter button, the camera app automatically cranks up the color saturation, artificially brightens the shadows, and sharpens the edges to make the photo look “better.”
While this creates punchy, social media-ready images, it often ruins the actual atmosphere of the scene. Sunsets become neon orange, grass becomes radioactive green, and subtle shadows are completely erased. If you prefer natural-looking photography or plan to edit the photos yourself in Lightroom, you must disable the camera’s automated AI processing.
You can force the camera to simply record the raw light hitting the sensor without applying heavy computational filters.
How to Disable Scene Optimizer (AI Enhancement)
The exact name varies by manufacturer, but it is always located in the primary Camera app settings.
On Samsung Galaxy Devices
- Open the default Camera app.
- Tap the Settings (Gear icon) in the top-left corner of the viewfinder.
- Under the “Intelligent features” section, tap on Scene optimizer.
- Turn the toggle switch to the Off position.
- (Optional) For maximum purity, tap on Advanced intelligence options and change the “Quality optimization” from Maximum to Minimum.
On Google Pixel Devices
Google relies heavily on computational photography (HDR+), which cannot be entirely disabled. However, you can save RAW uncompressed files to bypass the JPEG processing:
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap the Settings (Gear icon).
- Tap on More settings > Advanced.
- Turn on the toggle for RAW / JPEG control.
Your camera will now capture significantly more realistic, true-to-life images, preserving the natural lighting and colors of the scene precisely as your eyes see them.
