How to Stop Your Android Phone from Automatically Correcting Text Messages (Autocorrect)

Modern Android software keyboards (like Gboard or Samsung Keyboard) feature incredibly aggressive autocorrect algorithms. If the keyboard’s dictionary doesn’t recognize a slang word, a regional dialect, or a specific proper noun you are typing, it will instantly and automatically replace it with the closest “correct” dictionary word the moment you press the spacebar.

While this is helpful for fixing rapid typing typos (like turning “teh” into “the”), it is absolutely infuriating when you are trying to type a specific name, a video game term, or bilingual slang. Having to constantly hit backspace to undo the keyboard’s “corrections” significantly slows down your typing speed and can lead to incredibly embarrassing text messages if you hit send before noticing the change.

If you trust your own spelling abilities over an algorithm, you can completely disable the automatic replacement engine while keeping the helpful spelling suggestions bar active.

How to Turn Off Autocorrect on Android

The exact location of this setting varies depending on which keyboard you use, but it is always within the Language & Input menu.

  1. Open the Settings app on your Android smartphone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on System (or General management on Samsung).
  3. Tap on Languages & input (or Keyboard list and default).
  4. Tap on On-screen keyboard to view your installed keyboards.
  5. Tap on your active keyboard (usually Gboard or Samsung Keyboard).
  6. Tap on Text correction (or Auto replace on Samsung).
  7. Locate the toggle switch labeled Auto-correction (or toggle off the languages under Auto replace).
  8. Turn this toggle to the Off position.

Your keyboard will now strictly respect your keystrokes. It will still offer suggested words in the bar above the keys, and it may still underline misspelled words in red, but it will never forcefully change the text you typed without your explicit permission.
