In recent versions of macOS, Apple introduced a privacy-focused feature tied to screen mirroring. Whenever you plug your Mac into an external projector in a conference room, or initiate an AirPlay screen mirroring session to an Apple TV, macOS instantly and automatically enables “Do Not Disturb” (Focus) mode.
This is designed to prevent embarrassing, private iMessages from popping up on the projector while you are giving a presentation to your entire company. However, if you are simply hooking your MacBook up to a larger monitor at your home desk and you want to see your incoming Slack messages and calendar alerts on the big screen, this automatic muting is incredibly annoying.
You can configure the macOS Focus settings to allow notifications to flow freely even when your screen is mirrored or extended.
How to Disable Do Not Disturb During Screen Mirroring
You must adjust the global Focus settings to prevent this automatic behavior.
- Open the System Settings (or System Preferences) via the Apple Logo in the top-left menu bar.
- Scroll down the left sidebar and click on Focus.
- Click on the Do Not Disturb profile at the top of the list.
- Scroll down to the section labeled “Set a schedule.”
- You will see an automated trigger listed here labeled When mirroring to TVs and projectors.
- Click on this entry to open its specific settings.
- Turn the toggle switch to the Off position (or delete the automation entirely).
The next time you connect your Mac to an external display or projector, the notification center will remain active, ensuring you never miss a critical alert while working on a larger screen.
