Modern Android smartphones, especially flagship devices from Samsung and Google, rely heavily on computational photography. When you take a picture, the phone’s CPU instantly analyzes the image using AI. If it detects a face, a sunset, or a plate of food, it automatically applies a “Scene Optimizer” filter. It will aggressively crank up the saturation, smooth out skin textures, and artificially sharpen edges before saving the final JPEG to your gallery.
While this makes photos look “punchy” for social media, it absolutely ruins the natural aesthetic of the image. Grass becomes neon green, skies look radioactive, and human faces are smoothed out until they look like plastic mannequins.
If you prefer your photographs to look like actual photographs rather than AI-generated paintings, you must disable the Scene Optimizer.
How to Turn Off Scene Optimizer (Samsung)
Samsung’s implementation of AI enhancement is the most aggressive, but thankfully the easiest to turn off.
- Open the default Camera app on your Samsung Galaxy phone.
- Tap the Settings gear icon in the top-left or top-right corner of the viewfinder.
- Look at the very top of the settings menu for a toggle labeled Scene optimizer.
- Turn this toggle switch to the Off position.
How to Disable AI Processing (Google Pixel)
Google Pixels do not have a master “off” switch for AI processing, but you can mitigate it by saving the raw, untouched sensor data.
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap the Settings icon (or swipe down from the top).
- Tap on More settings.
- Tap on Advanced.
- Turn on the toggle for RAW+JPEG control.
Now, when you take a photo, the Pixel will save the heavily processed JPEG, but it will also save a DNG (RAW) file. This RAW file contains the exact, unedited light data captured by the sensor without any AI skin-smoothing or saturation boosts applied.
