By default, whenever you download a new application from the Google Play Store on your Android device, the operating system does two things: it places the app in your master App Drawer, and it immediately drops a shortcut icon onto the first available empty slot on your Home Screen.
If you prefer a minimalist home screen with only your most essential tools, or if you organize your apps into highly specific folders, this automation ruins your layout. Every time you download a game or a utility to test it out for five minutes, you have to manually long-press its icon on your Home Screen and drag it to the “Remove” trash can to clean up the mess.
You can tell Android to leave your home screen alone and only place new apps in the App Drawer.
How to Stop Automatic Home Screen Icons
Because Android home screens are controlled by “Launcher” apps (like Nova Launcher or the default Pixel Launcher), the exact location of this setting might vary slightly depending on whether you own a Samsung, Google, or OnePlus device. However, the general steps are identical.
- Navigate to your main Home Screen (close out of all apps).
- Long-press (press and hold your finger) on any empty, blank space on the screen.
- A menu will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Tap on Home settings (or simply Settings).
- Look for a toggle switch labeled Add app icons to Home screen (On Samsung devices, this might be called Add new apps to Home screen).
- Turn this toggle switch to the Off position.
That is it! The next time you install a new app from the Play Store, it will quietly install itself into your master App Drawer. Your carefully curated home screen layout will remain completely untouched until you manually drag a shortcut out of the drawer yourself.
