Many Windows users spend significant time carefully arranging their desktop icons—placing work documents in one corner, games in another, and system utilities neatly aligned along the edges. However, you might occasionally log into your PC only to find that Windows 11 has automatically scrambled all your icons, grouping them tightly together on the left side of the screen.
This frustrating behavior usually occurs when you change your screen resolution, connect an external monitor, or install a graphics driver update. While you cannot prevent Windows from adjusting to a new display, you can disable the specific feature that forces icons into an automatic grid.
How to Turn Off “Auto Arrange Icons”
Windows has a hidden right-click setting that forces icons to snap into a rigid layout. To stop this:
- Close or minimize all your open windows so you are looking at your bare desktop.
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on the desktop background.
- Hover your mouse over the View option at the top of the context menu.
- Look at the sub-menu that appears. If there is a checkmark next to Auto arrange icons, click it once to uncheck it.
When “Auto arrange” is disabled, you have total freedom to drag and drop icons anywhere on the screen, and Windows will generally respect their positions.
How to Stop Windows Themes from Changing Icons
If you recently installed a custom Windows theme and noticed that your Recycle Bin or “This PC” icons have changed visually (or moved), you can lock them down.
- Open the Settings app (Win + I).
- Click on Personalization in the left sidebar.
- Click on Themes.
- Scroll down and click on Desktop icon settings.
- At the bottom of the pop-up window, uncheck the box labeled Allow themes to change desktop icons.
- Click Apply, then OK.
Your core system icons will now remain exactly as you left them, regardless of which visual theme you apply to your PC.
