How to Change the Screen Brightness in Windows 11

Adjusting your screen brightness is one of the most common tasks you will perform on a laptop. A bright screen is essential for working outdoors or in a well-lit office, but that same brightness can cause severe eye strain in a dark room. Lowering your brightness is also the single most effective way to extend your laptop’s battery life. Windows 11 offers several quick ways to adjust this setting.

Method 1: The Quick Settings Panel (The Fastest Way)

The Quick Settings panel provides a slider that lets you instantly adjust brightness from anywhere in the operating system.

  1. Look at the bottom right corner of your screen (the system tray on the taskbar).
  2. Click on the cluster of icons that contains the Wi-Fi, Speaker, and Battery symbols.
  3. The Quick Settings menu will pop up. Look for the horizontal slider with a Sun icon next to it.
  4. Click and drag the slider to the left to decrease brightness, or to the right to increase it.
  5. The screen will adjust in real-time as you move the slider. Click anywhere outside the menu to close it.

Method 2: Using the Keyboard Shortcuts

Almost all modern laptops have dedicated brightness keys built directly into the keyboard.

  1. Look at the top row of your keyboard (the F1 through F12 keys).
  2. Find the keys that have Sun icons printed on them. Usually, one icon will be a smaller sun (brightness down) and the other will be a larger sun (brightness up).
  3. Press these keys to adjust the screen.
  4. Note: Depending on your laptop manufacturer (like HP, Dell, or Lenovo), you may need to hold down the Fn key at the bottom of your keyboard while pressing the sun keys for them to work.

Method 3: The Windows Settings App

If you are using a desktop PC with an external monitor, the quick slider might not be available, or you may want to access more advanced display features.

  1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (the gear icon).
  2. Make sure System is selected on the left sidebar.
  3. Click on Display on the right side.
  4. At the very top of the Display page, you will see a slider labeled Brightness. Drag it left or right.

A Note for Desktop PC Users

If you are using a desktop computer with a standalone, external monitor plugged in, you might notice that the brightness slider is completely missing from Windows 11. This is normal. Windows cannot natively control the brightness of most external monitors. To adjust the brightness, you must use the physical plastic buttons located on the monitor itself (usually found on the bottom edge or the back panel) to open the monitor’s built-in menu.
