Every Apple device ever manufactured is assigned a unique string of letters and numbers known as a serial number. You will rarely need to know this code during everyday use, but it becomes absolutely critical in specific situations. If you need to check your warranty status on Apple’s website, schedule a Genius Bar repair appointment, report the device stolen to the police, or sell your phone to a third-party buyer, you must provide the exact serial number. Fortunately, Apple makes it easy to find.
The Primary Method: Using the Settings App
If your iPhone turns on and you can unlock the screen, the Settings app is the fastest and most reliable place to find your device’s unique identifier.
- Unlock your iPhone and tap to open the Settings app.
- Scroll down slightly and tap on General.
- At the very top of the General menu, tap on About.
- Look at the second block of information on the screen.
- You will clearly see a row labelled Serial Number.
The string of alphanumeric characters next to it is what you need. Instead of trying to memorize it or write it down manually (which often leads to confusing an “O” with a zero), simply tap and hold your finger on the serial number for one second. A small Copy bubble will appear, allowing you to instantly copy the number to your clipboard to paste into an email or a support chat.
How to Find It If the Phone Won’t Turn On
What happens if your screen is completely shattered or the battery is completely dead, preventing you from accessing the Settings app?
- The Original Packaging: If you keep your tech boxes, find the original box your iPhone came in. Look for the barcode sticker on the bottom or back of the box. The serial number will be printed clearly next to the abbreviation “Serial No.”
- The SIM Tray: For almost all modern iPhones (from the iPhone 6s through the iPhone 13 series), the serial number, along with the IMEI number, is microscopically laser-engraved onto the physical SIM card tray. Use a paperclip or SIM ejector tool to pop the tray out of the side of the phone and hold it under a bright light.
- Your Apple ID Online: If you have another device (like a Mac or iPad) logged into your Apple ID, or if you can access a web browser, go to
appleid.apple.com. Log in, navigate to the Devices section, and click on your iPhone. The resulting pop-up will display your device’s exact serial number.
