How to Disable Keyboard Click Sounds on Your iPhone

By default, every time you tap a letter on the virtual keyboard of your iPhone, it produces a distinct, artificial clicking sound. While some users find this audible feedback helpful for typing accuracy, many others find it highly annoying, especially when texting rapidly in a quiet office, a library, or on public transport. If you want to type in complete silence without having to permanently mute your entire phone using the physical switch, iOS provides a simple setting to turn off keyboard clicks independently.

How to Turn Off Keyboard Clicks Permanently

Disabling the sound through the settings menu ensures that your keyboard remains silent regardless of whether your phone is on ring or silent mode.

  1. Unlock your iPhone and open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics (on older iPhones, this may simply be labelled “Sounds”).
  3. Scroll down until you find the section labelled System Sounds & Haptics (often near the bottom).
  4. Locate the toggle switch for Keyboard Feedback.
  5. Tap on Keyboard Feedback to open its specific menu.
  6. You will see two toggles: Sound and Haptic.
  7. Tap the toggle next to Sound to turn it off (the switch will turn from green to grey).

From now on, typing on the default iOS keyboard will be completely silent.

A Note on Haptic Feedback

In the same menu where you disabled the sound, you likely noticed the “Haptic” option. Haptic feedback provides a very subtle, physical vibration under your finger every time you press a key, simulating the feeling of pressing a physical button.

Many users who hate the audible “click” sound actually enjoy the silent physical vibration of the haptic feedback, as it improves typing speed and accuracy without annoying anyone nearby. If you turned off the sound, consider leaving Haptic turned on to see if you prefer the silent, tactile typing experience.

Third-Party Keyboards

It is important to note that this setting in the main iOS menu only applies to the default Apple keyboard. If you use a third-party keyboard app downloaded from the App Store (such as Google’s Gboard or Microsoft SwiftKey), they often have their own independent sound settings.

If your third-party keyboard is still making noise after following the steps above, you will need to open the specific application for that keyboard (e.g., open the Gboard app on your home screen) and look for the sound settings within its internal preferences menu.
