How to Enable High Contrast Mode in Windows 11

Windows 11 features a sleek, modern interface with subtle shadows, transparencies, and nuanced color palettes. While visually pleasing to many, these design choices can make the screen incredibly difficult to read for users with visual impairments, light sensitivity, or simply those working in environments with intense glare. To ensure accessibility, Windows 11 includes a feature called “Contrast Themes” (formerly known as High Contrast Mode). This feature fundamentally alters the operating system’s color scheme, using stark, highly distinct colors to maximize readability and reduce eye strain.

How to Enable Contrast Themes via Settings

Microsoft has built specific contrast profiles into the accessibility settings menu.

1. Click the Start button and select the Settings gear icon (or press the Windows Key + I shortcut).
2. In the left-hand navigation menu, click on Accessibility.
3. Under the “Vision” section at the top, click on Contrast themes.
4. You will see a dropdown menu next to the text “Contrast themes.” It is likely currently set to “None.”
5. Click the dropdown menu to reveal four built-in high-contrast profiles:
   • Aquatic: A dark background with bright blue, cyan, and white text.

Your screen will briefly say “Please wait,” and the new high-contrast theme will be applied system-wide, affecting the taskbar, windows, and supported applications.

How to Enable High Contrast Mode Using a Keyboard Shortcut

If you only need high contrast occasionally—perhaps when reading a particularly difficult document or when your eyes are tired at the end of the day—navigating through the settings menu every time is tedious. Windows provides a dedicated keyboard shortcut to instantly toggle the feature on and off.

1. Press the following three keys simultaneously: Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen (PrtScn).
2. Note: You must use the Alt and Shift keys on the left side of your keyboard; the ones on the right will not work.
3. A small dialogue box will pop up asking, “Do you want to turn on High Contrast?”
4. Click Yes (or simply press Enter).

The screen will immediately switch to the last high-contrast theme you used. To turn it off and return to your normal Windows 11 theme, simply press the Left Alt + Left Shift + Print Screen shortcut again.
