If you own a Windows 11 device with a touchscreen, such as a Microsoft Surface Pro or a 2-in-1 convertible laptop, navigating the operating system without a physical keyboard attached can be challenging. While Windows is designed to automatically pop up an on-screen digital keyboard whenever you tap inside a text box, this automatic detection is not always perfect. Sometimes you need to manually summon the keyboard to execute a keyboard shortcut or use the built-in emoji panel. To make this easier, you can pin a permanent “Touch Keyboard” button directly to your taskbar.
What is the Touch Keyboard Button?
The Touch Keyboard button is a small, dedicated icon that sits permanently in the system tray area of your taskbar (the bottom right corner, near the clock and Wi-Fi icons). Regardless of what application you have open or whether a text box is selected, tapping this icon will instantly force the digital keyboard to slide up from the bottom of the screen. It provides a reliable, manual override for touchscreen users.
How to Enable the Taskbar Icon
You can activate this button through the primary taskbar personalization settings.
- Right-click anywhere on the empty space of your Windows 11 taskbar.
- Click on Taskbar settings. (This will open the Settings app directly to the Personalization > Taskbar page).
- Scroll down slightly and look for the section titled System tray icons.
- Locate the option labelled Touch keyboard.
- To the right of this option, click the drop-down menu. You will see three choices:
- Never: The icon will never appear on the taskbar.
- Always: The icon will permanently reside on the taskbar, even if a physical keyboard is attached.
- When no keyboard attached: The icon will dynamically appear only when you disconnect your physical keyboard or fold your 2-in-1 device into tablet mode.
- Select either Always or When no keyboard attached depending on your preference.
Using the Touch Keyboard
As soon as you select your preference, a small keyboard icon will appear in the bottom right corner of your screen.
Simply tap the icon with your finger (or click it with your mouse) to summon the keyboard. Once open, you can tap the small gear icon in the top left corner of the keyboard interface to customize its layout, change its size, or switch it to a smaller, smartphone-style layout that floats on the screen for easier one-handed typing.
