Modern iPhones feature a convenient function called “Tap to Wake.” Because newer models lack a physical Home button, this feature allows you to wake up the screen simply by tapping the glass anywhere on the display. While this is incredibly useful when the phone is sitting flat on a desk, it can also lead to numerous accidental activations. If you frequently find your iPhone screen turning on while you are holding it, carrying it, or brushing against it, you can disable Tap to Wake to save battery and prevent accidental touches.
Why Turn Off Tap to Wake?
Aside from minor annoyances, the primary reason users disable Tap to Wake is to prevent accidental inputs. If the screen wakes up while the phone is in your hand, you might inadvertently swipe a notification, pause your music, or even trigger the flashlight from the lock screen. Disabling this feature forces you to intentionally press the physical Side Button to wake the device, ensuring the screen only turns on when you actually want it to.
How to Disable Tap to Wake in Settings
Apple categorizes this feature under Accessibility settings, as it directly impacts how you interact with the physical touchscreen.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
- Look for the toggle switch labelled Tap to Wake.
- Tap the switch so it turns from green (on) to grey (off).
What Happens Next?
The change takes effect immediately. You can test it by locking your iPhone screen and tapping the glass. The screen will remain pitch black.
To wake your iPhone moving forward, you must either:
- Press the physical Side Button on the right side of the device.
- Use the Raise to Wake feature (if enabled), which automatically turns on the screen when the phone detects the physical motion of being lifted toward your face.
If you find that pressing the Side Button is too cumbersome, you can always return to the Accessibility menu and re-enable the feature at any time.
