How to Disable the Snap Layouts Flyout in Windows 11

Windows 11 introduced a major productivity feature called “Snap Layouts.” When you hover your mouse cursor over the maximize button of any window, a small menu flies out, offering you various grid patterns to automatically arrange multiple windows across your screen. While many users love this feature, others find it highly intrusive. If you accidentally trigger the flyout menu constantly while trying to maximize a window, or if you simply prefer using the traditional keyboard shortcuts (Windows Key + Arrows) to snap windows, you can disable this hover menu completely.

Understanding the Setting

Disabling the hover flyout does not disable the snapping feature itself. You can still drag a window to the edge of your screen to snap it into place, and you can still use all the standard keyboard shortcuts. Turning off this setting only removes the visual pop-up menu that appears when your mouse rests on the maximize button.

How to Turn Off the Flyout in Settings

Microsoft placed the controls for window snapping in the multitasking section of the modern Settings app.

  1. Click the Start button and open the Settings app (or press Windows Key + I).
  2. On the left-hand navigation menu, ensure System is selected.
  3. Scroll down the right side of the window and click on Multitasking.
  4. At the very top of the Multitasking menu, you will see a master toggle switch labelled Snap windows. Do not turn this master switch off, as that will disable all window snapping entirely.
  5. Instead, click the small downward-facing arrow on the right side of the “Snap windows” box to expand the advanced options.
  6. A list of checkboxes will appear. Look for the checkbox labelled Show snap layouts when I hover over a window’s maximize button.
  7. Uncheck this box.

Testing the Change

The setting takes effect immediately without requiring a restart. To verify it worked, open any application (like File Explorer or your web browser) and leave your mouse cursor resting directly on top of the square maximize button in the top right corner. The flyout menu will no longer appear, allowing you to click the button cleanly without visual interference.

If you ever decide you miss the visual guide, you can simply return to the Multitasking menu and re-check the box to instantly restore the feature.
