In the bottom right corner of your Windows 11 screen, resting entirely flush against the edge of the taskbar next to the clock, is a nearly invisible sliver of a button. This is the “Show Desktop” button. Clicking it instantly minimizes all open windows, revealing your wallpaper. While some users rely on this feature heavily, others find themselves accidentally clicking it when trying to dismiss notifications or access the Action Center, completely disrupting their workflow.
The Annoyance of Accidental Clicks
Because the button lacks any visual borders or icons, it is incredibly easy to trigger by mistake when flicking your mouse cursor to the bottom right corner of your monitor. If you prefer using the keyboard shortcut (Windows Key + D) to reveal the desktop instead of your mouse, this invisible taskbar button serves absolutely no purpose and only acts as a potential annoyance.
How to Turn Off the Show Desktop Button
Microsoft allows you to disable this specific clickable area through the Windows 11 Taskbar settings.
- Right-click on any empty space on your Taskbar.
- Select Taskbar settings from the small pop-up menu. (Alternatively, you can open the Settings app, navigate to Personalization, and click on Taskbar).
- Scroll down the settings page until you find the section labelled Taskbar behaviors. Click on it to expand the menu.
- Look for the option that says Select the far corner of the taskbar to show the desktop.
- Click the checkbox next to it to remove the checkmark.
Verifying the Change
The change takes effect immediately without requiring a system restart. To test it, simply move your mouse cursor to the extreme bottom-right corner of your screen (past the time and date) and click. Nothing will happen. Your windows will remain exactly where they are, and you will no longer have to worry about accidentally minimizing your workspace. If you ever need to quickly see your desktop files, simply press Windows Key + D on your keyboard.
