If you want to quickly check the time, the weather, or your upcoming calendar events, raising your wrist only to be greeted by a giant “Now Playing” screen forces you to manually press the Digital Crown to dismiss the app and return to your watch face. How to Stop Auto-Launch Using Your Apple Watch
You can turn this feature off directly from your wrist in just a few taps.
- Press the Digital Crown on the side of your Apple Watch to open your app grid or list.
- Find and tap the Settings app (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down and tap on Display & Brightness.
- Scroll down until you find the section labelled Wake.
- Look for the toggle switch named Auto-Launch Audio Apps.
- Tap the switch to turn it to the Off position (the green background will turn grey).
How to Access Controls When You Need Them
Turning off this feature does not remove your ability to control media from your wrist; it simply stops the controls from aggressively hijacking your screen.
When you are playing audio on your iPhone and you raise your wrist, you will now see your standard watch face. However, a small, animated red playback icon will appear at the very top of the screen (dead center, above the time). Whenever you actually want to pause or skip a track, simply tap that tiny red icon, and the “Now Playing” control screen will instantly open.
