The Silent Tab Problem
Google Chrome has aggressive features designed to save system resources and improve user experience by preventing obnoxious autoplaying advertisements. One of these features involves automatically muting background tabs or tabs that you haven’t directly interacted with recently. While this is fantastic for blocking unwanted noise, it can be incredibly frustrating if you use Chrome to listen to web-based radio, long-form podcasts, or lo-fi background music while working in another application. You might switch away from a music tab, only to have Chrome arbitrarily silence the audio five minutes later because it deemed the tab “inactive.”
How to Manage Site-Specific Sound Permissions
Chrome allows you to explicitly whitelist specific websites, guaranteeing that the browser will never automatically mute them, regardless of how long they run in the background.
1. Open Google Chrome and navigate to the website you want to keep playing (e.g., Spotify web player, YouTube Music, or a Twitch stream).
2. Look at the very left edge of the address bar (omnibox) for the small padlock icon (or the “Tune” settings icon in newer Chrome versions) located right next to the URL.
3. Click this icon to open the site settings drop-down menu.
4. Click on Site settings (this will open a new Chrome settings tab specifically for that URL).
5. Scroll down the list of permissions until you find the entry for Sound.
6. Click the drop-down menu next to Sound (which is usually set to “Automatic (default)”) and change it to Allow.
By explicitly setting this to “Allow,” you override Chrome’s automatic muting algorithms for that specific domain. The site will now play audio indefinitely, even if the tab is buried in the background or minimized.
Checking the “Memory Saver” Feature
Chrome’s recent performance updates introduced “Memory Saver,” which completely suspends inactive tabs. When a tab is suspended, its audio output is killed entirely.
1. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of Chrome and select Settings.
2. In the left sidebar, click on Performance.
3. Look at the Memory Saver section.
4. If you leave Memory Saver turned on, you must use the Always keep these sites active list. Click the Add button and enter the URL of your music or podcast website.
This prevents Chrome from putting the tab to sleep, ensuring continuous, uninterrupted audio playback.
