The Bandwidth Hog
Downloading large files like operating system ISOs, high-resolution video assets, or massive video games can take hours. If you need to temporarily free up internet bandwidth for an important video call or a competitive online gaming session, you might click the “Pause” button on a large Chrome download. However, you might find that if your network connection drops briefly, or if you restart the browser, Chrome aggressively attempts to automatically resume the paused download without asking for your permission. This can cause your network to unexpectedly slow to a crawl right in the middle of a critical task, forcing you to constantly monitor the downloads page.
How to Forcefully Suspend a Download
Chrome does not have a dedicated “never auto-resume” button in its main settings. The browser’s default behavior is to relentlessly pursue completion. To stop this, you have to manage the download proactively.
1. When you need to pause a download, do not just close the browser hoping it will stay paused.
2. Press Ctrl + J (Windows) or Command + Option + L (Mac) to open the dedicated Chrome Downloads page.
3. Locate the large file currently downloading and click Pause.
4. If you know you will not want this file to resume anytime soon, and you cannot risk an automatic restart, the safest option is to click Cancel. Yes, you will lose your progress, but it guarantees your bandwidth will not be hijacked later.
Managing Background Apps
If you paused a download, closed Chrome, and it resumed anyway, it is likely because Chrome is still running invisibly in the background.
1. Open Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top right and go to Settings.
3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
4. Turn Off the toggle switch labelled Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed.
Now, when you pause a download and close the Chrome window, the browser process completely terminates. It physically cannot attempt to reconnect and resume the download until you explicitly launch the browser again and navigate back to the Downloads page to manually click “Resume.”
