The Silent Credit Card Capture
Google Chrome is designed to make online shopping as frictionless as possible. One of the ways it achieves this is by aggressively offering to save your credit card numbers, expiration dates, and billing addresses whenever you make a purchase on a new website. If you accidentally click “Save” instead of “No thanks” in the pop-up prompt, Chrome permanently stores that financial data in your browser profile (and potentially syncs it to your Google Account). While this speeds up future checkouts, many users consider storing sensitive payment data in a web browser to be a massive security risk, especially on shared family computers or work laptops where other people might have access to the browser session.
How to Disable Chrome’s Payment Method Saving Feature
You can turn off this feature entirely. Once disabled, Chrome will stop recording your keystrokes on checkout pages and will no longer interrupt your purchases with the “Save card” pop-up prompt.
1. Open Google Chrome on your computer.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the browser window.
3. Click on Settings from the drop-down menu.
4. In the left-hand navigation sidebar, click on Autofill and passwords.
5. In the main settings pane, click on Payment methods.
6. You will see a toggle switch labelled Save and fill payment methods. Click this switch to turn it Off (it will turn grey).
7. Below that, you will see a second toggle labelled Allow sites to check if you have payment methods saved. It is highly recommended to turn this Off as well for maximum privacy.
Chrome will now completely ignore your credit card inputs on checkout forms. You will have to manually type your card number every time you buy something, but your financial data will no longer be stored locally in your browser profile.
How to Delete Previously Saved Credit Cards
Turning off the feature does not delete cards that Chrome has already captured in the past. To purge your existing data:
1. Stay on the same Payment methods settings page (Settings > Autofill and passwords > Payment methods).
2. Scroll down to the “Saved payment methods” section.
3. If you see any credit cards listed here, click the three vertical dots next to the card.
4. Select Remove.
5. Repeat this process for every card on the list until the section is completely empty.
