The Accidental Flip
If you use a Windows 11 2-in-1 laptop, a Microsoft Surface tablet, or a monitor with a built-in gyroscope, you have likely experienced the screen suddenly rotating 90 degrees into “Portrait” mode just because you tilted the device slightly while sitting on the couch. Trying to use the mouse sideways to find the setting to flip it back is an incredibly disorienting and frustrating experience.
How to Lock the Screen Orientation
You can permanently lock the screen orientation using the Windows 11 quick settings panel or the main Settings app, ensuring the screen remains exactly how you want it, regardless of how the physical hardware is tilted.
The Quick Settings Method:
1. Look at the bottom-right corner of your taskbar, next to the clock.
2. Click on the cluster of icons containing the Wi-Fi, Volume, and Battery indicators.
3. The Quick Settings panel will pop up.
4. Look for the button labelled Rotation lock.
5. If the button is highlighted (turned on), the screen is locked in its current position. If it is unhighlighted, the screen will rotate freely. Click it to ensure it is turned On.
The Main Settings Method:
1. Click the Start button, type Settings, and press Enter.
2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
3. In the main pane, click on Display.
4. Scroll down to the “Scale & layout” section.
5. Locate the toggle switch labelled Rotation lock.
6. Click the toggle switch to turn it On.
Why is the Rotation Lock Button Greyed Out?
If you navigate to these settings and find that the Rotation Lock option is completely greyed out and unclickable, it means your Windows 11 laptop is currently in “Desktop Mode.” Rotation lock is only available when the device detects it is acting as a tablet. If you have a 2-in-1 laptop, fold the keyboard completely backwards (or detach it if you have a Surface Pro). The button will instantly become clickable, allowing you to lock the orientation before pulling the keyboard back out.
